![]() FEDS ON VERGE OF UNLOADING BUILDING ‘BONANZA’
It was a huge year-end present the U.S. Congress was gifting Hawaii before adjourning for the holidays. Much thanks to the Senate Appropriations Committee chaired by senior Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Hawaii’s share of the $l.1 trillion spending bounty is $387 million. Also joining in the 57-35 majority vote was isle Senator Daniel K. Akaka. In addition to the financing of near-completing and soon-to-start construction projects – which make up the bulk of the funding for island needs – also benefiting are island health, education and veterans’ programs. The House, with Representatives Neil Abercrombie and Mazie Hirono in support, at this writing is awaiting President Obama’s signature. Meantime the State has submitted for HUD
review proposed renovation and repair of public
housing units dispersed among 65 locations with a
value aggregating an estimated $10 million. HUD
for the purpose has available a little over $16 m illion.
Public comments are due by Dec. 26 before any
