Summer is upon us, construction for trades work is either starting up or going full force in the Islands. From the expansion of the commuter terminal at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport to building communities across our state - Ho‘opili and Kaka‘ako. These are the types of opportunities we want to get in on from the very beginning, which will help us obtain work for our members.
According to the Department of Business, Economic & Development & Tourism (DBEDT), over the past few years construction has been a steady contributor to job growth in Hawaii.
“THESE ARE THE TYPES OFIn the first quarter of 2017, private building permits in the state increased 66.3 percent or $361.9 million compared to the same time last year. Additionally, residential permits increased 126.8 percent, while the value of commercial and industrial permits increased 203.2 percent. DBEDT’s report also revealed government contracts awarded spiked 22.1 percent or $38.7 million compared to the first quarter of 2016.

This is good news for our industry as we head into the second half of the year. We have our business agents monitoring projects around the state and are in continuous contact with contractors to receive updates about what is happening in the field.
With that, we will continue this year on an upswing and tackle the rest of 2017 with continuous commitment and hard work from all of us at Local 675.
